I figured out that this was the issue for me after learning that kali is developed and tested using the most recent versions of virtualbox and vmware. Once done, you should be able to launch virtualbox and run kali without issues. If it is, should then automatically install any additional tools (such as virtualbox-guest-x11) to give a better user experience. Find your current version with this command uname -aĪfter downloading the virtualbox deb package, install it with the following command(replace the file path with that of your specific deb package) :ĭpkg -i ~/Downloads/virtualbox-.1_6.1.18-142142~Ubuntu~bionic_b During Kali Linux setup process, the install wizard should detect if its inside a VM. Once you've uninstalled virtualbox, go and download the latest version from the website : Make sure that you get the one for your current version of linux. Sudo apt-get remove virtualbox sudo apt-get purge virtualbox* If you're on linux, use the following commands(your vms shouldn't be deleted when doing this) If you're running a 5x version, then you have found your issue. Launch virtualbox, go to help > about virtualbox Here's how I was able to fix it the other day. Use the file menu in VirtualBox to install Kali Linux: File > Import Appliance, then navigate to the kalilinux.ova file and click Next.
